Introduced in 2001, the Dot NAME generic domain extension is the sole TLD supposed to be for personal sites only. These domains can consist of personal or fictional names, nicknames and/or other labels people are famous by. At first, solely third-level registrations were allowed, so if you desired to secure john.doe.name, you had to do that under .doe.name. In 2004, however, the registration procedures were loosened and 2nd-level registrations were also permitted. Already grabbed third-level names remained functional.
